Today's spaniels originate from the British islands, but they come down from dogs "espagneul", imported in times by now remote, the term spaniel derives in fact probably from "espagneul" the ancient French name with which the Spanish dogs were designated. The origins of the breed go up again to the ‘300 Spaniard, in ‘600 spread together in the whole western Europe with other spaniels among which the Springer and in the XVIII century they made entry in Great Britain. The spaniel for excellence is the cocker, the "modern" type is native of the Galles and of the Devonshire. Thanks to an accurate selection, the "modern" cocker is clearly differentiate from primitive cocker that more or less it had the Springer features, the breed that we know today it’s established in fact in the late XIX century and in the Thirties it was the most diffused breed in Great Britain. Its name seems that derive from "cock" that in English it means woodcock, in the ancient times he was used above all for the woodcock hunting thanks to its extraordinary, energetic and tireless smell. Villard, a deep expert of this breed, in one of his tale affirms: "Doesn't exist a dog more sociable, more servant, more affectionate and more vivacious than cocker; his psychology makes him extremely interesting. Intelligence, goodness and malice are well fused, it obeys not for servility but for communion of ideas with his owner, of which diviner all the intentions, its fidelity is great"."
